Last week we covered some key things to focus on when designing your e-newsletter. Here are a few more to make sure your newsletter is a successful tool for keeping your customers up-to-date.

DO Personalize the Newsletter

Addressing the newsletter to the reader’s name makes it more familiar and eye-catching. You can go even further with this by customizing the content depending on variables like the reader’s birthday – present them with a special offer on that day.

DON’T Forget to look at the statistics

It’s a good idea to have some form of tracking for your newsletter. The more data you can get – the better. Mail Chimp has a great analytics tool built in. Find out if your news updates are being read and shared or marked as spam and deleted.

DO Design the Newsletter for Optimal Readability

As the newsletter is designed for quick news updates, the content needs to be concise and easy to read/scan through. If there is too much text material, the reader might simply lose interest.

DO Emphasize Links in the Newsletter

Any links should be clearly defined both in context and visually. Use white space to create focus points, and apply unique color or other text treatments to draw attention to call-to-action links.

DO Encourage Sharing of the Newsletter

Get more bang for every send out. The newsletter should be easy to share – social media integration is a great wait to achieve that. With Mailchimp there are many social media platforms that can be integrated and customized with your e-newsletter campaigns.

DON’T let your Newsletter become SPAM

Avoid sending unsolicited email to a list of people who don’t know you. You need to have the newsletter subscribers’ consent. Simply using existing contacts to send them the newsletter is also spamming. Make sure the newsletter design is consistent and reflects your brand identity. If it doesn’t look familiar to the subscriber, he or she may regard it as spam.

The Double-Opt in method of Newsletter signup ensures the subscriber’s full consent.
How it works:
I) Subscriber signs up for the newsletter on the website
II) Subscriber gets an email asking for confirmation and accepts.
